Oceanside Little League
February 2020 Newsletter
The days are getting a bit longer and we are ramping up our league activities. We are about 2 months away from our opening day for our major league programs! These next 2 months will go quickly with several important dates on the calendar.
Registration:
Registration numbers are very low at this point. Registration for major and minor league programs will close on March 22nd at midnight. T-ball registration closes on May 15th. Anyone who is not signed up by the close of registrations will not be able to play. Please consider signing up sooner rather than later. Earlier registrations help the league plan for the upcoming season in a timely manner. Register for the 2020 season at oceansidelittleleague.org.
Evaluation Day:
Evaluations for major softball and baseball will be March 28th at the PITCH in Warren. Softball will begin at 9am and baseball will begin at 10:30am. There will be an informational meeting for parents and guardians of baseball players regarding the structure and changes to this year’s baseball divisions. This will take place at 10:30 during the baseball evaluations. St. George and Vinalhaven residents will have their own evaluations at a separate time.
Major Baseball News:
At our last board of director’s meeting it was determined that we will be fielding 5 major league baseball teams pending registration numbers. These teams will consist of 3 teams with residents from Rockland, Thomaston, South Thomaston, Owl’s Head and Cushing and one each from St. George and Vinalhaven.
Any player who was on a Rockland/Thomaston based 11/12 team last season will be assigned to that team again this year (Elks, Lions, and Fisher). Those players will not need to attend the evaluation day. All other players ages 9-12 will need to attend the evaluation day on March 28th.
Major Softball News:
It looks like we may need to subtract one of our major softball teams from the Rockland/Thomaston based teams. This is based on projected available returning players and last year’s minor softball numbers. It is not known which team will be eliminated at this time. Hopefully, our numbers are such that we won’t have to. Any player who was on a major softball team last year, and is eligible to play again this year, will not need to attend evaluations on March 28th. All other players ages 9-12 will need to attend the evaluations.
Minor League News:
We are in hopes of building our minor league programs back up to a level where we have enough teams to promote a fun and valuable experience for our players. Minor league play will focus on fundamentals, rules, and preparation for our major league division in the coming years. Our board of directors are busy going over the current structure and rules of this division, to get this program where we feel it should be.
T-Ball News:
T-ball will begin later in the spring, usually mid-May. Our T-ball program is an introductory program mainly focusing on the basics of baseball and softball.
Volunteers:
It takes many hands to make each season as successful as possible. We are always looking for help in our concession stand, for coaches, field prep, and umpires. We are also looking for members of the community to join our board of directors. If you would like to help in any of these capacities, please feel free to reach out and we can point you in the right direction.
As always, please feel free to direct any questions or comments to [email protected]. Follow us on Facebook or visit our website at oceansidelittleleague.org for updates and other news!
We look forward to the weather improving and getting back on the fields!
